CUPID’S ALMANAC and Guide to Hearticulture for This Year and Next. Compiled for D. Cupid by John Cecil Clay and Oliver Herford. Boston: Houghton, Mifflin Company.
The combination of Mr. Herford and Mr. Clay is one of the happiest that could be effected in the preparation of such a book. If, as the title suggests, Dan Cupid chose the author and illustrator he is wise beyond even the claims of his ardent admirers. These capable collaborators present for study such interesting specimens as the check weed, aspira poetica, the overdue billberry plant, April-foolia, newflamea, spagettmenot – national flower of italy – the commutation or bundle bearer weed, the hammock vine, etc. The botanical notes upon these curiousities of the garden of Cupid are highly scientific, and Mr. Herford presents a dissertation upon each of the months of the year, with special reference to hearticulture. The result is an altogether delightful little book.
