[LA FEMME.] WOMAN. [LA FEMME.]
The Baltimore Exchange says:
‘In L’Amour, Michelet has shown us the rudimentary woman, so to speak — unformed dependant, helpless &mdash needing to be soothed, sustained, guided, strengthened; and he says — love her! In La Femme, he introduces us to the cultivated woman, fitted by her education for all the duties of a wife and mother; and he says — marry her! La Femme begins, therefore, where L’Amour left off.’
The Troy Arena says:
‘Michelet occupies the same position in French society and literature that George Bancroft or Dr. Lieber, or Henry Carey, or Wheaton, sustain in the United States; and the fact that he has quitted the field of law and history to discourse about love and the composition of woman, only shows that Frenchmen are unlike any other men.'”
