“Cambridge native JOHN BARTH has a new book coming out in August. It’s called ‘Giles Goat Boy or the Revised New Syllabus.’ Last year, a poll of 200 authors, critics and editors rated Barth among the best of American novelists to emerge in the past 20 years.”

“John Barth’s new book, ‘GILES GOAT-BOY OR, THE REVISED NEW SYLLABUS’ will be published by Doubleday August 5, 1966. The editors of Doubleday & Company are calling it ‘Barth’s magnum opus to date.’

While he was working on his book, which took him more than four years to write, someone asked John Barth what it was about. He replied: ‘It’s a longish story about a young man who is raised as a goat, later learns he’s human and commits himself to the heroic project of discovering the secret of things.’
John Barth’s editor, Doubleday’s Anne Freedgood, says: If GILES GOAT-BOY can be described, this is as good a description as any. It is indeed longish – 774 pages – and it is set in the modern world, or a magnificent facsimile of the modern world known in the book as “The University”. It is like no other novel.'”
